Margaret Higgins Johnson, 97, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2018. She was born October 30, 1920 to George and Julia (Turner) Higgins, Sr., near Bomarton, Texas.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., in the Masonic Cemetery with Benny Archer officiating, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
After graduating from Seymour High School in 1937, she received her Bachelor’s degree from Hardin Simmons University in 1940 and later her Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the then North Texas State University in Denton.
Her first employment was in the Farmers National Bank in Seymour. During WWII, she was employed at the Naval Air Training Base in Corpus Christi. After the war, she was a civilian employee of the Eighth Army on Yokohama, Japan.
She married H. Clyde Johnson, Jr. in 1949. After returning from Japan, the couple owned Seymour Sales Company until his death in 1955.
She taught at North Texas State University, the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and after 24 years at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln until her retirement in 1987 as Professor Emeritus. She authored and co-authored several textbooks in Business Education and Business Communications.
She served as president of Mountain-Plains Business Education Association of Nebraska State Business Education Association, on the national Policies Commission for Business and Economic Education, and on the Executive Board of national Business Education Association. She co-sponsored Alpha Upsilon chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon, a national graduate organization of Business Education and was the Nebraska State advisor to Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda.
She was the recipient of several awards for leadership and service, including Mountain-Plains Business Education Leadership Award, 1977, Nebraska State Business Education Association Service Award, 1979, United Business Education Award as Outstanding Graduate Student in Business Education, North Texas State University, 1957 and Nebraska Future Business Leaders for Outstanding Service, 1968,
She has been listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Women, Leaders of Education and other biographical references.
After retirement, she divided time between Tucson, Arizona and her home in Seymour. She was active in several organizations, serving as President of the Welcome Wagon, Tucson Northeast, 1990-91, and of the Alumnae Club, 1995-96. She received the Alumnae Club’s Woman of the Year Award in 1999. She was on the Tucson Symphony Women’s Association Board, 1993-2001. She also served on the Board of Development, Hardin-Simmons University, 1994-97.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, George W. Higgins, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Bomberger and husband, Gregory; 2 nieces, 2 great nephews and 2 great great nieces.
