Gene Darrell Adams

— Beloved Father, Friend, Mentor, Banker, and Grandaddy (1933 – March 1, 2026)

Gene Darrell Adams, a devoted family man, respected community leader, influential Texas banker, and steadfast follower of Jesus Christ, passed away on March 1, 2026, surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the First Baptist Church in Seymour, Texas. A private graveside with military honors will be held under the direction of Archer Funeral Home, Seymour, Texas.

Born on August 6, 1933, in Brownwood, Texas, Gene grew up with a strong work ethic and a deep faith that would guide him throughout his life. He was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving from 1954 until 1956, during the Korean War. A loving husband, father, and proud Grandaddy to five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, he taught those closest to him the value of reading the Bible, serving others, and embracing hard work.

Gene’s professional life was marked by distinguished service in the banking industry and civic engagement. After earning his Bachelor of Business Administration (1954) and Master’s degree in economics (1962) from Hardin-Simmons University, he embarked on a remarkable 65-year career in community banking. He worked with several Texas banks before becoming president of First Bank & Trust in Seymour and later founding Baylor Bancshares, Inc., where he served as Chairman, President, and CEO.

His expertise and leadership were recognized nationally. Gene was a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas from 1974 to 1979, helping shape regional financial policy during a dynamic period for the U.S. banking system. He also served on the advisory board for the Comptroller of the Currency, further contributing to the sound oversight of national banking practices.

In 1993, Gene expanded his impact internationally when he accepted an invitation from Russian bankers to serve on a committee in Moscow, advising on the transition of Russian financial institutions toward a free-enterprise banking system following the Soviet era. This unique work reflected his commitment to economic development and global financial cooperation.

Throughout his life, Gene remained deeply connected to Hardin-Simmons University, serving on its Board of Regents (including as chairman) and earning induction into the University’s Hall of Leaders in recognition of his service and contributions. He earned many awards at Hardin-Simmons University including the Keeter Alumni Service Award for rendering great service to the university. Gene was also inducted into the HSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003 as a member of the 1954 National Championship tennis team.

Gene was also a faithful member of First Baptist Church and a dedicated community leader whose steady presence, quiet wisdom, and generous spirit touched countless lives. He served as Chairman of the Board at the Baptist Church Loan Corporation in Dallas, Texas, for many years. He also served at the North Texas Rehabilitation Center in Wichita Falls, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Irma Adams. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, friends, and colleagues who will carry forward the lessons of faith, integrity, and steadfastness he shared.

Gene’s life was defined by service — to his family, his community, his profession, and his faith. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Archer Funeral Home, Seymour, Texas.
