Dr. James “Jim” Robert Mitchell went to his heavenly home on Sunday, July 7 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Western Hills Baptist Church in Wichita Falls. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery in Seymour, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Jim was born October 13, 1948 in Dallas, Texas to the late James Cecil "J.C." and Berniece Mitchell. He grew up in Dallas and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1970. He attended Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1974. Dr. Mitchell's dental practice eventually led him to Seymour, Texas where he met the love of his life, Judy Carrington Tankersley. They married in 1980 and formed a union of love for over 44 years and worked beside each other for 40 years in their dental practices in both Seymour and Electra.
Dr. Mitchell’s passion for his work was evident to all who knew him. His kindness, intelligence, and unwavering dedication to his patients and community set him apart in Seymour and Electra. Through his selfless acts of service, Dr. Mitchell touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact in the towns he loved so dearly.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. His love for his children, Shane Porter, Jamey Mitchell, and Jodie Tankersley, was immense, only surpassed for the love for his grandchildren, Collin and Clair Porter and Alex and Jack Mitchell. “Poppy” was an active grandfather going to sporting events and countless shopping excursions. His love for the Lord, dedication to the church and servant heart will be a lasting legacy for his family. Jim was a member of Western Hills Baptist Church in Wichita Falls where he served as a deacon.
Left to adore his memory is wife Judy Mitchell of Wichita Falls; daughter Shane Porter and husband, Scott, of Wichita Falls; son Jamey Mitchell and wife, Meredith, of Midland; grandchildren Collin Porter and wife, Emily, and great-grandson due in October of Fort Worth; Clair Porter and boyfriend, Chace Iglecias of Dallas; Alex and Jack Mitchell of Midland. He is also cherished by sister-in-law Linda Reddell of Munday; brother-in-law Trey Carrington (Linda) of Throckmorton; sister-in-law Joy Bowling (Kenn) of Wichita Falls; sister-in-law Katie Pritchard of Seymour; brother-in-law Dennis Carrington of Seymour; and brother-in-law Rance Carrington (Stormie) of Seymour; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Berniece Mitchell; in-laws Willie and Delphine Carrington; brother Terry Mitchell; daughter Jodie Tankersley; and brother-in-law Jimmy Reddell.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls, 4909 Johnson Road, Wichita Falls, Texas or Western Hills Baptist Church, 5107 Ridgecrest Drive, Wichita Falls, Texas.
Family visitation will be held Tuesday, July 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Archer Funeral Home, 111 N. Cedar Street, Seymour, Texas.
