Janette Christian, 96 of Seymour, passed from this life on Thursday, July 2, 2026 in Seymour.
Services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dillon Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Vera Cemetery with Father Bose Jujuvarapu, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Janette was born on December 23, 1929 at the Seymour Hospital. She was raised in Vera in the Cottonwood Community on the family farm, doing chores and riding her beloved horse, Dunny. She was baptized in the Vera Baptist Church as a youngster and attended the Cottonwood School until the 5th grade, when the school consolidated with the Vera School. She graduated from Vera High School in 1947 and then attended Texas Tech University for 2 years. Janette married Calvin Christian on July 31, 1949 at the Vera Baptist Church. Calvin passed away in 1999. The couple began their married life on a farm north of Vera and quickly added two sons, Scott and Steve, then later a daughter, Sharon. Janette was a dedicated mother, homemaker and farmer’s wife, delivering many hot meals to the men working in the field. As the children grew, she renewed her love of education by taking several classes from Vernon Jr. College and was still practicing her Spanish with a willing nurse in the care home. She loved being a student, while always yearning to be a teacher. She fulfilled that dream by substitute teaching in the Seymour Schools, then later, by starting a special needs Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church, always reaching out to others with the love of Jesus. Later in life, she became the “designated” driver for many of her friends (she was the only one who still had a driver’s license) when they were no longer able to drive themselves. Many a wonderful afternoon was spent eating ice cream cones and searching the country roads for wild flowers.
Janette was a loving mother and wife. When seven grandchildren came, she joyfully loved them as well, making her house a gathering place with lots of home made food and special memories. Later, she was blessed by 14 great grandchildren, who always knew where Granny kept the snacks and candy. Even while in the care home, she had a drawer full of goodies for them. She was even known to slip a bit of chocolate to her grandson, Chris during church services in the care home when they went a bit long for him, still being a loving grandma.
Her family has been blessed with so many wonderful memories because she made it all happen. Her quick wit and humor have been passed down and will continue to be enjoyed. She loved all she met, living out her baptismal promises to Jesus. We miss her greatly, but rejoice in knowing we will see her again in Heaven.
Janette was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Marguerite Greene Beck; and infant sister, Mary Jean Beck; brothers, Jackie Greene Beck and Jerry Scott Beck; her husband of over 50 years, Calvin Christian and daughters-in-law, Tomye Christian and Becky Christian.
She is survived by her 3 children, Scott Christian, Steve and Karen Christian and Sharon Christian; her 7 grandchildren, Chris Christian, Calvin and Brook Christian, Shane and Misti Christian, Jessica and Tim Kelly, Meaghan and Tim Slama, Damon Hertel and fiancé Ashley and Adam Hertel and 14 great grandchildren, Kylie Christian, Connor and Alana Christian, Dylan and Malia Kelly, Tyler, Allison and Makenzie Slama; Ean, Easton and Case Hertel and Kryslyn, Brooklynn and Avery Hertel.
The family would like to say Thank You to those at the care center who loved our mom and took such good care of her. We also want to thank the medical staff at Seymour Hospital for making her last days so peaceful and loving. Your kindness to her means the world to us.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Vera Cemetery Association,1156 County Road 4185, Seymour, Texas 76380.
