Maria was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Martin and Eva Alejandro. She came from a large and loving family and was one of 12 siblings, a heritage that gifted her with lifelong memories, music, and togetherness.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Joe R. Gutierrez, with whom she shared a life of commitment, love, and faith. Maria is also survived by her three children: Sylvia Gutierrez Estrada, Jose Gutierrez and Marcos Gutierrez Alejandro
Her legacy continues through her seven granddaughters: Cecilia Lopez, Lisa Schlachter, Mercedes Gutierrez, Adriana Gutierrez, Briana Herrera, Victoria Estrada, and Jennifer Estrada,
as well as 15 great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy.
Maria was a deeply nurturing grandmother, tender-hearted and devoted. To her granddaughters, she was much more than a grandmother — she was a second mother. She guided them, protected them, prayed for them, and loved them with a fierce and gentle love that shaped their lives forever. Her home was their safe place, her arms their comfort, and her wisdom their grounding.
Maria lived a life marked by service and dedication. In her younger years, she worked at Travis Middle School, where she spent many meaningful years supporting students and staff. She later took pride in her work providing janitorial services at the hospital, and later at BSA, serving her community with diligence and kindness.
Raised on a farm, Maria’s love for nature and animals—especially cats—was a lifelong comfort and joy. She treasured tending to her garden, walking for exercise, and visiting local ponds to feed the ducks. Coming from a talented musical family, she loved to sing and play the piano, often lifting her voice in worship and sharing her musical gift with others.
Above all, Maria was a woman of deep and unwavering faith. She found strength and peace in the Lord, carried a gentle spirit, and loved with all her heart. Her presence brought warmth, compassion, and encouragement to everyone blessed enough to know her. She loved going to church, building friendships, and living her life in a way that reflected God’s love.
One of her cherished Scriptures, Psalm 103, captures the spirit of her faith:
“Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name…
Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies.”
And another verse that guided her life and strengthened her hope:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish
but have eternal life.”
— John 3:16
Maria’s life was a beautiful testament to these words — a life filled with kindness, mercy, generosity, and the love of God.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
