Miriam Wheeler Knox, 95, of Wichita Falls, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 8, 2015 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was born August 29, 1920 in Bonham, Texas to Eugenia and Herbert Wheeler.
Her childhood and early life were spent in Commerce, Texas. After graduating high school, she attended Texas State University. She worked for the U.S. Post Office and Braniff Airlines in San Antonio during the World War II years.
She married Jack C. Knox, Sr. of Seymour, Texas on May 3, 1942 in San Antonio. She was a resident of Seymour from 1946-1947 as husband, Jack worked for the Seymour Mercantile, before making the Army a permanent career. She spent over 30 years as an Army wife, supporting her husband's career, living in the Philippines, Germany, France, as well as numerous U.S.A. locations.
She and her husband retired to the central Texas town of Salado in 1972, building a home and enjoying friends in the Mill Creek Community. She enjoyed close companionships with friends there in bridge groups and supper club events. In 2007, they relocated to the Rolling Meadows Retirement Community in Wichita Falls, Texas.
She always saw beauty in the world, serving on the Temple Texas Arts Council and was active in Humanities of Salado, Texas. She enjoyed playing the piano, fashion, decorating and her yard. She modeled for the Grace Jones Shop of Salado during her years there. She and husband Jack were members of the United Methodist church of Salado. They were members of The First Presbyterian Church of Seymour after relocating from Salado.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Jack C. Knox; her parents and a sister, Martha Keith Martin PhD. She is survived by her son, Jack C. Knox Jr., and wife, Jane of Seymour; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Knox of Olympia, Wa., Katherine O'Brien of Trabuco Canyoun, Ca., and Elizabeth LaPole of Loveland, Co.; and 7 great grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Daniel, Kacey, Courtney, Jack and Abigail.
Services will be Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 4:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, Seymour, Texas with Rev. Steve Sulwold, officiating. Interment will be Monday, November 9, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, under the direction of Archer Funeral Home, Seymour, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, Seymour, Texas, the Whiteside Museum of Natural History, Seymour, Texas or Hospice of Wichita Falls.
