Barbara Hardin Obituary

The family of Barbara Sue Squires Hardin announce with sadness the passing of our mother in Flower Mound, Texas. A private family funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church in Seymour, Texas, with Dr. David Warren officiating under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Barbara was born in McQuady, Kentucky, on Sept. 25, 1931. She was the proud first daughter of Robert and Anne Squires who lived outside of McQuady on a tobacco, corn, and soybean farm. Barbara worked with the family on the farm until she left for Bethel Women's College in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She graduated with an Associate's Degree in Secretarial Administration, after which she was ready for a new life beyond the Kentucky farm.
She married Lieutenant Cletus Hardin on May 14, 1954, and they raised their family of five children on Army bases from Germany and Italy to many across the U.S. They retired in 1973 to Seymour to wheat and cattle farming as they ushered their children off to college one by one. Barbara also worked at the Russell Newman factory as a seamstress and finally at GTE as a telephone operator until she retired in the mid-80s. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, playing Mexican Train dominos with the family, trips to Kentucky, and her cat Lyra. In her later years, she moved to Flower Mound where she was a member of Lakeland Baptist Church.
We fondly remember Barbara as a woman who graciously represented her country all over the world in her multiple calls to duty as an Army officer's wife and as the mother of her children. She built a strong home and instilled the values needed for all of her children to grow and move forward to start their own lives and families.
Barbara is lovingly remembered by her five children and their spouses, daughter Elaine Beck and husband Kent of Copper Canyon; son Tony Hardin and wife Cecila of McKinney; daughter Sherri Dowhower and husband Steve of Vernon; son Randy Hardin and wife Laurie of Frisco; and daughter Cindy Phebus and husband Butch of Prosper.
Also left to cherish her memory are Barbara's 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Josh and Marcy Beck and Joe; Elizabeth and Ryan Garriott and Lucy, Henry and Olive; Adam and Carly Beck and Evan and Annie; Jace Beck; Ty, Jacob and Eli Hardin; Rachel and Clayton O'Neal and Micah, Landon, and Averie; Drew and Sheridan Dowhower; Davis and Meredith Hardin, Brandon Edwards; and Dani Travis.
She is survived by her sister Judy and brother-in-law Thomas Neal Hicks of Hardinsburg, Kentucky, and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara is proceeded in death by her parents, Robert and Ann Squires and her sister Patty Squires Bishop.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation 636 Morris Turnpike Suite 3A, Short Hills, NJ 07078 US information@christopherreeve.org
