James Elliott Obituary

James “Gig” Edward Elliott passed away Saturday, November 7, 2020, in Seymour at the age of 58.  James was born on May 5, 1962, to Woodrow Wilson Elliott and Neva Nell (Vaden) Elliott in Seymour, Texas at Baylor County Hospital.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Benny Archer officiating in the Bomarton Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.

He graduated from Seymour High School as a proud Panther with the Class of 1980.  He worked numerous jobs growing up, but he finally found his passion when he began his law enforcement career in Matagorda County in 1993.  He transferred to the Wharton County Sheriff’s Department in 1996, where he served dutifully until his retirement in August of 2020.  While employed at WCSO, James received the prestigious honor of “Officer of the Year” in 2004.  He worked as a patrolman, field training officer, patrol Sergeant, investigator, and finished up his career as a Civil Deputy until his retirement.

James was a dedicated and loving husband, father, brother, and son.  James never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went.  He was definitely a Texas original, and he was a hell-raiser and cut-up right until the end.  James was known by many names including “Gilligan”, “Gig”, and to his hunting buddies, the famous “Duster Hits.”  He was an avid Texas Longhorns fan, and he loved riding motorcycles, hunting, and fishing.  He really enjoyed these past few months spending time with his family and friends.  He became a “professional” marble player and brewed the best cup of coffee in the neighborhood.

James married Misty (Jensen) Elliott on March 16, 2007, in El Campo, Texas.  He adored and loved her, and would do absolutely anything to put a smile on her face.  Through great joys and adversities, they were a solid support system for each other, and they were inseparable.  Two of his proudest accomplishments were his daughters, Jessica and Megan.  He loved them dearly, and he was so proud of the young women that they have become.  He adored his grandsons, Christian and Caleb, and would brag about them to anyone who would listen.  He was also excited about the upcoming birth of his first granddaughter.

James had a smile that was contagious, and he was our ray of sunshine on a cloudy day.  He was a selfless man with a huge heart, and he would willingly help anyone that asked.  James will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

James was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow Wilson Elliott, Sr.; 4 brothers, David Scott, Woodie Elliott, Jim Latham and Billy Latham; 2 sisters, Phyllis Thompson and Eula Lee Elliott and his grandparents, Edward and Ida May Vaden and Ma and Pa Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Misty Jensen Elliott; 2 daughters, Jessica Elliott and son-in-law Kori Braithwaite and Megan Elliott; grandsons, Christian and Caleb Walker with a granddaughter on the way; his mother, Neva (Vaden) Elliott; 2 brothers, Randy and Judy Elliott and Pero and Jennifer Elliott; his sister, Leann and Jerry Arnold and numerous, aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members and many friends.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
